TappanZee Bridge Replacement
The HRFA NJ has been asked to sit on a citizens review committee to look in to the various options to replace the aging TappanZee Bridge. HRFA Director Gil Hawkins will be attending the meetings. So far, the only meeting that has taken place had at least 80 proposals for replacing the structure. Everything from Tunnels, to commuter rail bridges, freight rail bridges, several construction types, roadway logistics all have to be analyzed. This study is expected to take at least 5 years to reduce the number of proposals and designs to two or three.
The HRFA is concerned about the construction that will be going on during the spring run of spawning striped bass in the Hudson. We want nothing to interfere with that. We will keep you posted on the developing situation on our Environmental Page.
New York Considering Re-opening
Commercial Striped Bass Fishing in Hudson River
The governor appointed Hudson River Estuary Management Advisory Committee has recommended re-opening of the commercial fishery for striped bass in the Hudson river. The commercial fishery was closed down due to high levels of PCBs found in the Hudson River striped bass in 1976. Recent tests, funded by the leading polluter of PCBs, (The General Electric Company) have shown a lower level of PCB concentrations in the fillets of Hudson River Striped bass. Environmental groups, recreational fishing organizations, health organizations, and the EPA have all questioned the results and procedures of these latest tests.
The commercial fishing sector has jumped on these test results and pushed for the re-opening of the commercial sale of Hudson River striped bass. The public health does not seem to be a concern of the commercial fishermen.
The HRFA has designed a letter for you to sign on to in an effort to get your voice heard in opposition to this commercial fishery. It requires you to click on the link below, give your name and address, and click on "Submit." That's it. your letter of opposition will go to 25 of the leading officials concerned with this proposed legislation.
Second day after sending this notice out 1400 letters were sent expressing the feelings of a disappointed public towards this proposal. That's communication. That's effective communication!
If you feel strongly about protecting the striped bass as a resource, click on the link and sign on.
Thanks. HRFA Action E-Mail Click Here!*
For the latest on this issue and More on the History of the closing of striped bass fishing on the Hudson and how it relates to G.E. and the PCBs can be found on our Conservation Page.

This access pamphlet written by HRFA ,NJ President ( current director and Web Master) Charles Stamm, lists 29 "Hot Spots" to fish along the Hudson River from Jersey City to Piermont. With research gathered from numerous HRFA members, who have fished these waters for years, you will find this a valuable asset in fishing the River. The pamphlet lists the areas to fish at what time of year, for what species, and what techniques and baits to use. The brochure comes with complete color maps to help you get to some of those "hard to find" places. Tides play an important role in the success of fishing the Hudson. A spot that produces fish on one tide will generally not produce on the opposite tide. This is all discussed in the pamphlet. Tips on tackle, Currents, Baits, and even where to buy your baits are discussed. Pick up the issue at the General Meetings!
