JOEY K GUIDE SERVICE

The JOEY K Guide service is to help the shoreline angler catch the salmon of a lifetime. Joey shows you the ropes as far as tackle, baits, locations and techniques.  Joe will be constantly yelling at you to "Get Down Stream!!!"  Joe will wade with you and get you to all the hot spots.  Coho and king salmon are his specialties. From late August until late in October the 30 and 40 pounders come into the Salmon river and only the experienced ones get to land their limits.  Joey K will have you with those elite anglers.

Call Joey at 315-387-3276 for the current season rates.  You might just catch him on the river on his cell phone at 908-419-0138. You will have a good time with this guide.

They offer a convenient bed and breakfast which will only cost you $25.00 a day which includes a generous and hearty breakfast. Bill and Pat Hiltebeitel run the place. For breakfast try one of Bill's Manhole Covers and let me know what you think.  The rooms are clean and comfortable.   Not the lap of luxury but they'd throw most of us out of a fancy hotel anyway.   Too many fish guts hanging off us!  This place will do just fine and for $25 bucks, you can't beat it.

Check out the "Pink House Bed and Breakfast at 315-387-6276

These guys have a great organization.  They will make your trip as easy and trouble free as possible.  Book right on line. All boats come with radios and life jackets. (Don't laugh, some boats don't! There are some horror stories out there) This on-line sight gives you everything you need to book your trip including choice of boats and captains (with qualifications), along with rates and fishing reports.   Their office is right on the marina and will have coffee and lunch waiting for you.

pices fleet.jpg (17248 bytes)

You can also book your trip with Pisces from home using your credit card.  This is more convenient than using or carrying cash. You can pay for it in full at the time of booking or just put a deposit and pay the balance when you get there.   Using your credit card also insures the best exchange rate as the card companies get the best rates.  Much better than the locals give you when you are down there.

YAYO Fishing Charters

Roberto Gurerena   Captain

I have been fishing with Roberto on the YAYO for about 10 years.  He speaks English very well and is one of the finest captains in all of Cabo San Lucas. I have also fished with his son Roberto Jr. He also speaks English and does a fine job as captain like his father.  One trip Joe Curvino and myself had 11 marlin in one day on this boat.  It's not the fastest boat in Cabo but he will put you on fish.  He goes after Marlin, Dorado, Wahoo, Sailfish, Roosterfish, Tuna, and will also bottom fish if that's what you like.  He captains a 28 foot sport fisherman and leaves out of in front of the Hotel Mar de Cartez in downtown Cabo.  He has no computer but you can call him from the States at 011 52 624 143 0519.

He is the most likable charter captain in all of Cabo San Lucas.  Tell him Charlie to you to call.  Charlie from New Jersey...Hudson River.

Roberto has purchased a new boat and now offers two boats for your fishing needs.  The new boat, the YAYO II is a 32 foot sportfisherman with twin Chrysler diesel engines.  This is a very nice boat to go fishing on.  Again, they are not wealthy Mexicans and do not have a computer for you to book a charter.  You can call to Mexico with the numbers listed above.

Victor's Fleet

PALMILLA BEACH
San Jose del Cabo, B.C.S. Mexico

(114-21147)

SportFishing in Los Cabos is excellent all year! August and September is the rainy season but excellent fishing for big Marlin, Tuna, and Dorado. Striped Marlin is best January through June. Wahoo is best June through December. Tuna and Dorado are abundant most of the year. The Gordo Banks, one of the most productive fishing spots in the world, is known to hold giant Black and Blue Marlin, July through November

Victor's Fleet runs it's operation right off the beach . He specializes in 23 foot panga fishing boats. click on his link and check out the specifics.  I have done well with his captains. Inexpensive fishing with good results.  You can book on line!

For a map of Baja to get your bearings, click Here!*

La Playa Sport Fishing

San Jose Del Cabo, BSC Mexico

Mexican Panga fishing at it's best.  Right near the corridor of Hotels in San Jose Del Cabo, Tomas Cantor hosts some of the finest Panga Captains in the area. All La Playa pangas include certified crews, all tackle licenses and taxes, tackle, and fish cleaning.  All boats are 22 foot pangas and 23 foot super pangas. All have 55 hp outboards. All have VHF radios with all safety equipment and fish boxes.  All boats depart at 6:00 am and return at noon.  boats can take 1, 2, or 3 anglers.  Price per day per boat ( as of January 2001) is $170 for the 22 foot panga and $200 for the 23 foot super panga. Prices are in US dollars.  For reservations contact Tomas Cantor at Phone or Fax # 011-52 (114) 2-11-95 or on his cellular phone...044-114-80469.

chas ken tuna web.jpg (30002 bytes)

HRFA members Chas Stamm and Ken Carson show off their mornings catch of Yellowfin tuna.  The large one in the middle weighed in at 80 pounds

I have used Tomas' fleet many times.  They specialize in Tuna.  Yellowfin Tuna. Some times 10 to 20 pound schools.   Sometimes 40 to 80 pounds are in. Tuna seem to be closer to the San Jose area than to the Cabo San Lucas area.  Takes only minutes to get tot the Gordo Banks from the La Playa area.  A much shorter ride by boat than from Cabo.  Captain Modesto is one I have used on more than one occasion.  He speaks enough English to make the trip enjoyable.  He has the best eyes for spotting fish.  He also can put you on marlin, Roosterfish, Wahoo and work the reefs for all sorts of species.  If you want a break from the big boats, try these guys.  I like the 23 foot super pangas.   They have center console steering as opposed to tiller steering.  Seem to ride better.    Capt. Chas Stamm  HRFA NJ

Costa Rica

Golfito Sailfish Rancho

  info@golfitosailfishrancho.com  1-877-726-2468

The Best Sport Fishing Experience You'll find in Costa Rica!

lodge1.jpg (90042 bytes) This has to be one of the best places in the world for Sailfish.  March of 2004 HRFA members Chas Stamm, Nick Mennona, Joe Curvino and Ken Carson made the trip down to the Golfito Sailfish Ranch.   The place is set up just for fishermen.  If you want ECO Cruises and Jungle excursions for pleasing the wife, you may want to go over to the other side of the gulf of Dulce and go to the Crocodile Bay lodge.  If you want to go to a place that specializes in fishing...Golfito is the place to go.
This is on the west coast of Costa Rica in the southern section of the country on the boarder of Panama.

These are some of the notes from our trip:

We were targeting sailfish on this trip but I was also looking for some good action with Roosterfish as well. We took a flight to Miami, then to San Jose Costa Rica, stayed overnight in the capital city and then a 6 am flight out to the Pacific coast of the country, very close to the Panama border.  From there we took an hour bus ride and then a boat to the lodge.
Quite an adventure already!!  This was not an easy place to get to!

47b7cc30b3127ccec283cd38f25100000016101Abs3LFs2bMQe3nwk (27800 bytes)

47b7cc30b3127ccec28291eb53d000000015101Abs3LFs2bMQe3nwk (34656 bytes)

The fishing at the lodge did not disappoint us at all. I guess we raised an average of 10 to 15 sailfish per day. Per boat

We fished two to a boat in new 27 foot Ocean Master Boats.  All boats at this lodge were 27 foot Ocean Masters.  All meals, drinks and booze were included.

Shown at the left is Nick releasing a nice looking sail.

In “Raising” sailfish, what you do is troll lures without hooks in them.  When a billfish comes up behind one of the lures, you tease him closer to the back of the boat, lift the lure out of the water and throw him either a fly or a live sardine.  When he takes the bait, you hang on!  What an exhilarating experience.  Fifteen times a day!

I guess we averaged getting in the boat and releasing 2 to 4 sailfish per day for each angler.  Roosterfish up to 25 pounds, Spanish mackerel, Dorado, pompano and a host of other fish made this a very special adventure.  The sailfish were outstanding.

Chas_sailfish_drop_gif.gif (148753 bytes)

Joe used his fly rods for the most part and I used conventional gear of a Calcutta 400 and a triggerstick to bring them in.  Same stuff I use for the Stripers in the Hudson only these fish were all between 80 and 120 pounds.

If you want Tarpon, you go to the east coast of Costa Rica.   If you want sailfish, you want the west coast.

The only down side of the place is that the rooms had no air conditioning.

That was not a big issue as the tropical breeze was always present.  Still, when you came in from a long hot day on the water, it would have been nice to collapse on a bed in a nice cool air conditioned room.  Guess I'm getting spoiled.

Crocodile Bay across the Bay has Air Conditioning!

The views from all the rooms give a breathtaking view of the Gulf every evening.  Absolutely a magical place.

47b7cc30b3127ccec283ada973c000000016101Abs3LFs2bMQe3nwk (36485 bytes)

I would still go back to this place...even without the air conditioning.  The fishing was that good. But...I might try Crocodile Bay the next time.
