To be eligible to apply:

  • The senior must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.

  •  The senior must demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA application process and supplying the student aide report, SAR response letter.

  •  The senior must plan to enroll in an accredited two or four year college or university the following Fall.  Some proof of acceptance, commitment or deposit must be documented with application.

  •  The senior must obtain two written recommendations from school officials.  One should come from either a teacher and/or guidance counselor; another should come from the administrative team.

 Preference will be shown to the following:

  •  Students, who demonstrate extra or co-curricular activities.

  •  Students, who participate in community service projects.

  •  Students, who have managed to work part time.

  •  Students, who register to pursue environmental sciences.

Your application should be postmarked by May 24, 2009

Financial need must be demonstrated through the Federal FAFSA application process.  Students and parents apply through the college of their choice.  The FAFSA form determines the parents’ ability to pay for college.  It will determine how much scholarship money is awarded to the student, how much money in loans is approved and more importantly how much the family can afford to pay.  Naturally, the tuition from college to college varies greatly, but how much the parents can afford to pay does not change much.  The real difference in college tuition is made up in grants and loans.

All applications will be ordered from low to high in regards to ability to pay.  If there are 15 applications, they will be ranked from 1 to 15.  This ordinal number will be multiplied by 5 to get a composite score.  In addition to financial need, all other criteria will be weighted and scored.  The candidate with the highest overall score will be the recipient of the HRFA Scholarship.
