beneath ads spoil plot, not sales: in the openining paragraph, male film critics talk about how the trailers to the movie give away the secrets ofwhat lies beneath. their complaints are followed by this:

Let 'em carp, say executives at DreamWorks. "All the film critics are men," says DreamWorks marketing chief Terry Press. "I know this is shocking, but we didn't make the movie for them."

The target audience of adult women is responding, she says.

is she unknowingly saying that their target audience isn't bright enough to see how the trailers ruin the film?

here's another gem from the article:

"People will complain that all the best jokes are in the TV spots and the trailers," she says. "But there is real documentation that when people show up at the theater, they want to see the very stuff that's been shown to them already. You saw the big wave at the end of The Perfect Storm in the trailers. That didn't ruin it for anybody."

yes, but their ad spots didn't tell you that everyone DIES in the film! and that's the "secret" of the movie, though many knew it going in. anyhow, it's interesting to see marketing folks try to explain away their idiocy.

music & me: a timeline: inspired by mike's awesome account of the formation of his listening tastes, here's a far less comprehensive take on my own.

1977:
i'm born.

1978-1981:

i can't remember much here, and i'm pretty sure music didn't play a large part in my life during this period.

1982:
we got cable. which means that we now had mtv. i had no idea what mtv was, but after a few minutes of watching it, i knew i wanted it. one of the first memories that i can still clearly remember to this day is of dancing to prince's "1999" in front of the television. mtv would soon become verboten in our house and having it on was a punishable offense. (oh, how my parents wish parental control and v-chips were around back then!) i'd go to a party for one of my cousin's and i'd first see and hear michael jackson's thriller. the day was dark and gloomy which, when combined with the title cut of that album, spooked me good.

1984:
when i was younger, my family would go on trips quite often, usually to vermont or atlantic city. vermont was about a 6 hour drive : when my sister and i were very young, my parents would play tapes of fairy tales to keep us quiet; now that we were slightly older, my parents played tapes of golden oldies and we'd have sing-alongs in the car. my favorites were the motown and classic soul tracks: this is where i believe my love of soul and r&b began. i remember being particularly fascinated by the feral growl of teddy pendergrass (whose name i thought was harold melvin; i mean, why wouldn't his name come first if he was the lead singer?) on "if you don't know me by now."

1985:
at day camp, we have talent contests. i'm in a group with older kids and we'd perform songs like "raspberry beret." i still remember getting dressed "cool" for these competitions, raiding my mom's jewelry box for bad-ass rings and looking like an extra from breakin' 2. 1985 was also an important year as it marked the beginning of my love affair with rap music. i heard doug e. fresh's "the show" which, as some of you may remember, has a keyboard riff taken straight from inspector gadget. i was amazed and i laughed and i thought, "this music is so much FUN!" at the day camp, we'd have kids who'd breakdance and they'd perform to songs like "the show" and other electro tunes.

1986:
by being in fourth grade, i'd finally be able to be a part of the school chorus. even then (especially then), i loved to sing and dance and getting to do so in front of large numbers people thrilled me even more. i don't think we ever performed anything modern -- indeed, we'd do oldies-themed shows. i'd perform my first solo this year (it was "a dream is a wish your heart makes" from a disney-themed show). performing music only made my love for it grow.

1987:
this year, i finally received an allowance from my parents, which meant one thing: money to spend! i'd buy my first cassette, bobby brown's don't be cruel. a good friend of mine at school and i were the only guys in our grade who liked r&b and dance music (the other guys were mostly into hair metal). i still remember getting called names and being made fun of for liking black music (guess the slurs that were being tossed around). it didn't stop us: we'd ape the singing and dancing styles and he would even start to dress the part.

1988:
my best friend was into a lot of heavy metal, probably because his brother was into it big time. he'd have posters of ozzy osbourne and the like all over his room and he'd usually be rocking out any time you went in there. it was here that i'd learn to hate heavy metal, and i pretty much still do. there are some exceptions and they were difficult to reconcile because of that hatred, but by and large, heavy metal and hard rock isn't something i'm into.

1989:
i entered junior high school, which meant meeting new kids, a number of whom shared my interest in music. i remember these days very fondly; they were some of the best of my life. with junior high school, we were introduced to the concept of the school dance. it was great fun, even if that many people didn't dance. the music was great: lots of house music and a ton of hip-hop. by year's end, more and more people would start to dance, even if they couldn't. for a brief moment, people seemed to enjoy all kinds of music: the popular stations in the area would play prince, bruce springsteen, madonna, technotronic, etc. all together and it was okay for white guys to like black music. if i recall correctly, 1989 was the year "u can't touch this came out." at this time, i was voraciously taping things off the radio and making mixtapes, a practice i continue to this day. i played the song for a number of friends and it just took off like wildfire, mirroring the country's strange obsession with the song. this may be the first time i realized how much joy i felt when introducing people to new music.

at this point in my life, i was listening to most anything: rap, dance, new jack, pop, and rock, but not hair metal or most heavy metal (though i did like some guns & roses). i was still basically just a radio and mtv kid; i didn't branch out into underground artists or really old artists...that would come later. as will the rest of the story.

new moby album on the way: actually, it's here...on these shores, at least. and it's good: the finer tracks from animal rights are included so you never have to get anywhere near that album. it's a very good compilation, though i get the feeling it's going to be a coffee-table record, much like portishead's dummy or, hey, even his own play. how ironic that, in the uk, where he had a number one album, this compilation may never be released.

guess which folks she's talking about. this page is basically dr. laura's call to arms to her listeners, urging them to support the advertisers who've still stuck with her show. it's sickening and manipulative, much like dr. laura herself.

X-MEN - dir. bryan singer
when i heard that x-men was finally coming to the screen, i was a bit afraid of the news. thinking back to big-screen adaptations of captain america and the punisher and looking at the odd cast of unknowns and pseudo-stars, i feared that the movie would be at best ,a flop, and at worst, an embarrassment. when i read comics, x-men was my favorite: the characters were well-developed and possessed a rare humanity, while the art was always eye-catching. i always thought it had great potential as a film but i feared how it would be presented.

this all explains why i waited a week to see the film. i waited for the reviews to come in: both fans and non-fans seemed to be saying that it was excellent. still, i went into the films with relatively low expectations. to say that i had those expectations exceeded may not be saying much; to say that it's the best comic adaptation i've ever seen may also be low praise; let me say, then, that it's giving gladiator major competition for the best film i've seen all year.

as i mentioned above, i had a number of concerns about the film. for one, i was afraid that the special effects would come off looking cheap. gladly, this was not the case: x-men has incredible visuals and the effects are often stunning. secondly, i thought that the studio may dumb-down the film and turn it into something for kids: this was not a problem. it's a very adult movie, far more so than i would've imagined. there's lots of violence (nothing terribly gory), some sexual tension, and more than a little foul language. beneath the high gloss, there's a very dark movie, and i imagine that the sequel will remove a lot of the polish. finally, i was worried that the movie and its characters may be antiquated: again, i had nothing to fear. the characters are all thoroughly modern -- no yellow spandex for wolverine, thankfully -- as is the story. it's a cool representation of superheroes at the turn of the millennium, even if it isn't exactly the matrix in terms of futurism. praise goes to director singer for his vision and to the actors who were fine, if sometimes underutilized, across the board, especially jackman who is wolverine: he nails both the attittude and the expressions.

it's a bit of a strange thing being a comics fan. there's a stigma attached to it, once which may have lessened as they went more mainstream in the 90s. you read the comics and you appreciate them and you want others to do the same, but there's always the fear that you'll be made fun of for it. x-men takes a comic that i once loved and treats it with the utmost respect: the characters are like real people, not generic stereotypes. the end result seems to have entertained many people as the box office numbers would indicate -- fans and non-fans, sci-fi buffs and people just out looking to see a good film. for this, once again i give thanks to all involved in the making of the movie. x-men is well-paced, smart, funny, brimming with action, and comes highly recommended. bring on the sequels!

answers for jerwin: i'm going to write a review of x-men later, but for now, some answers:
1) storms seems to be a bit timid, at least in this movie. she draws in the enemy, making them think she's helpless, and then she socks it to them.

2) i don't think xavier's powers give him something like "spider-sense." besides, he seemed otherwise occupied when mystique entered.

3) i don't know! i figured she would. maybe she just doesn't have good control of her powers yet.

4) soon, i'd hope. they should get a much bigger budget for this film and the success of the first one gives them some room to experiment.
