John Connor has been a volunteer with Healing The Children
for many years. Dr. Connor exceeds excellence as a pediatric urologist
by being gifted in the surgical treatment of extrophy of the bladder.
This is a rare birth defect that few surgeons will undertake, but John
has the skill, expertise and persistence to surgically care for these
young patients and give them an opportunity for a normal life.
In addition to his exceptional surgical skills John Connor has the personality that puts his young patients and their families at ease. Host families praise his talent and his compassion and genuine concern for children under his care. John was honored for his outstanding service to children in need and for furthering the goals of Healing the Children Midlantic by being presented with the 2004 Sergio Award at HTC's annual dinner, held on April 2nd, 2004 |

J. Mark Engel, MD … As we are watching the violence in the Middle East all of us pray for peace. Why all this aggression is happening, I do not know. However as Americans we must remember that it is important to reach out to others. What better way than to give the gift of a healthy life? The children we serve today may be a future president of a country or someone who will find the cure for cancer. I believe they will remember the Americans who helped them. The Sue Tiger Award was presented to J. Mark Engel for his humanity, humility and for showing the world how well people can work together caring for others in another land.

Marge Poveromo, RN … Marge realized our future was out there somewhere. She knew it could be in the arms of a young mom or it may be taking those first few steps. Maybe our future is just learning to spell or going off to school. We all know our future is out there in our young children and our greatest calling is to help them. When Marge looks into the eyes of a child she remembers she is looking into the eyes of the future. Marge decided she would be part of shaping that future as a volunteer for Healing the Children. She gives of herself helping children live healthier lives, making it possible for them to carve out their place in history. Marge has made a conscious decision to help make this world a better place. We at HTC honored Marge with the Jhansi Chowdary Award for outstanding service to children and furthering the goals of Healing the Children. |

Marguerite has been a dedicated Healing the Children volunteer behind the scenes for years. I can remember one of my first experiences working with her. In the past Healing the Children sent over the counter medicines, baby items and toiletries by truck to impoverished areas in the Appalachian Mountains. For months HTC would solicit, collect and store these items at my husband's company. The storage area left a lot to be desired. It was cramped, hot in the summer, cold in the winter and not the cleanest place, since it was located at a tree company. Before the articles could be shipped a group of volunteers would go through the donated supplies and pack them in boxes. When Marguerite offered to help, my first thought was that the work would be too difficult for her. I certainly did not want to tell her that, so off we went to pack. Marguerite worked alongside us for hours; she never complained about the temperature (we were roasting!), never stopped to take a break and she was certainly able to lift heavier boxes than I could. I learned something on that day: Marguerite was a hard worker and could outwork me any day. We had Healing the Children in common and we became friends. Over the years I grew to admire this quiet, gentle person, who is always willing to help in any way we ask her. Marguerite is one of those special people who can look at an average day and see precious opportunities to connect with other people in a meaningful way. As a volunteer for Healing the Children she extends a helping hand to children struggling to survive. She is truly making a contribution to the community and to the world.
