It may not be one of the main campaign issues, but a candidate's position on tolls speaks volumes about what kind of Governor he will be.
Will he make our roads safer and air cleaner?
Will he reduce our taxes by eliminating unnecessary and wasteful bureaucracy, or does he want to hand out $millions in patronage jobs and contracts?
Does he think that everyone should be taxed fairly and equally for their roads, or that a minority should be unfairly gouged for all of eternity?
Doug Forrester (Republican candidate for NJ Governor) - Doug Forrester met with representatives of CAT on August 26. In general, we were pleased to find that Mr. Forrester recognized Parkway tolls to be a most inequitable tax and an excessively expensive and inefficient tax to collect. He is right on target with this opinion! We are disappointed that Candidate Forrester has not publicly embraced this philosophy, nor has he publicly included removal of Parkway tolls as a formal plank in his platform. But we are taking the candidate at his word; and trust that, as Governor, he will begin the process of complete removal of Parkway tolls. Please give this information careful consideration as you decide which candidate you will pick for our next Governor.
Jon Corzine (Democrat candidate for NJ Governor) - Sen. Jon Corzine has not responded to repeated requests for meetings with CAT representatives. He claims that he is strong on government efficiency; yet, he apparently fails to recognize the Parkway tolls as the unfair tax that they are! We are extremely disappointed that this candidate has failed to speak out on this issue; and, no matter how busy his schedule might be, it would seem that he would at least have had a moment to respond to the comprehensive amount of information we have supplied - several times over - to his office. We can only hope that, if Sen. Corzine should be elected, he will change his posture on this issue and recognize that removal of Parkway tolls is long overdue!
Jeff Pawlowski (Libertarian candidate for NJ Governor) - Appeared at CAT's May 24th Toll Forum at the Hampton Inn in Woodbridge. Mr. Pawlowski addressed the crowd and was a vigorous supporter of removing the tolls from the Garden State Parkway. This candidate takes a strong stand on Government inefficiency in general and recognizes that Parkway tolls are an inefficient and unfair tax. Jeff Pawlowski deserves your consideration as you follow events leading up to the General Election in November.
Hector Castillo (Education Not Corruption Candidate) -
If you remember, both major candidates promised to remove GSP tolls the last time - we were that close to our goal! Unfortunately, the one who won turned out to be less than honest, and promptly proceeded to waste $millions upgrading and adding tolls instead of removing them. We hope for better from our next Governor.
