The cost of collecting tolls on the Garden State Parkway. Toll collecting requires a force of hundreds of people and costs and estimated $70 million annually. Personally, I'd rather my tax dollars be spent on making roads, not on making change. Check out this list of some of the things your money pays for, plus a list of some of the salaries.
Tolls vs. Safety - The New Jersey Highway Authority touts the Parkway's safety record as "one of the best in the nation". But given the fact that the highest percentage of the accidents occur near the toll plazas (see graph below), we think the Pakrway would be safer without tolls.

Is E-ZPass the answer? Governor Whitman's $488 million, 5 MPH solution to "the traffic nightmare". Question: wouldn't removing the tolls speed traffic much better and cost a lot less? Why is it politicians can never find the money to remove the tolls, but they can find $488 million for high tech new ones?

Gas Tax vs. Toll Tax. Which is better? Although CAT has developed a plan to eliminate tolls without a tax hike, a measly 3¢ gas tax hike would be more than enough to cover the Parkway's operating costs. How much is 3¢? A heck of a lot less than paying tolls. So, how would you want to pay for the roads you drive on?
