Manasquan, NJ - May 30, 2007 -- Citizens Against Tolls (CAT) is appalled, once again, by Gov. Corzine's continued refusal to acknowledge the fact that Parkway tolls are the most inefficient tax facing the Public in these difficult budget times. "The Governor's consistent ignoring of the facts presented in hard data on Citizens Against Tolls web site (www.endtolls.com) indicates that fiscal efficiency is not his main concern," stated Ray Neveil, CAT President. "He continues to promote schemes that perpetuate the status quo, and we have to wonder why," Neveil added.
"Further," Neveil continued, "the recent fiery fatal crash at the Egg Harbor Parkway toll booth seems not to weigh on the Governor's conscience. And recent press reports point to a tractor trailer accident at a toll booth in Mexico which killed 10 people. A crash at that same toll booth in December, 2005, left 12 dead. What can the Governor be thinking?" Neveil asked.
"A dedicated 1.5 to 2-cent gasoline tax will provide enough revenue to maintain New Jersey's toll roads and will cut the bloated bureaucracy and end the tired patronage system involved in administering the toll collection process. Even in these times of high gas prices, this is still the most efficient way. But it takes brave leadership - the kind which the current Governor promised in his campaign speeches - to achieve such goals. CAT representatives have repeatedly offered to sit with the Governor or his appropriate representatives to hammer out solutions. Corzine's lack of response illustrates that his focus seems to be somewhere beyond the Public good!" Neveil concluded.
