CAT Officials testified at the June 19th meeting, called by Assembly members Sean T. Kean and Jennifer Beck (both Monmouth County), to air concerns and opinions about Gov. Corzine's plan to sell or least the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike.
Testimony was overwhelmingly AGAINST the Governor's proposals. Member of citizen groups, professional organizations, and individual citizens spoke out against selling the State's assets and especially decried the lack of public input in the Governor's plan and lack of opportunity for the public to vote on such proposals. The need for oversight and accountability in any such proposals was highlighted by CAT members and the probability of increased tolls was pointed out as a foregone conclusion.
This meeting was the first of several that Assemblyman Kean and Assemblywoman Beck would like to hold in western and coastal Monmouth County and in neighboring Ocean County.
Subsequently, soon after this meeting, the Governor announced that he was putting such proposals on the back burner UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION!!! If it wasn't clear to New Jerseyan's before, it should be abundantly clear after this action that the Governor (and many legislators) recognize that this is an unpopular idea with the public! How flagrantly insulting to "shelve" this nonsense until after (they assume) these people are returned to office! Suffice it to say that any legislators in support of these proposals should NOT BE RETURNED TO OFFICE. And, for that matter, neither should the Governor when his next term of office is pending!
