Who we are

Sophie Dashfield Dr. Karen Dashfield Hi, I'm Dr. Karen Dashfield, DVM. I am a member of First Special Response Group, an international search and rescue organization, which is planning a search and rescue training mission trip to Turkey. I will be part of the mission and, with the help of Sophie, my German Shepherd, I will be teaching a canine paramedics course and assisting with the training of canine handlers in search and rescue techniques. To find out more about 1SRG, click our logo below. I am also a member of Northeast Search and Rescue (NESAR) as team veterinarian, board member and canine handler. I work full-time as a veterinarian at Newton Veterinary Hospital in Newton, New Jersey.

Destination

We're going to a town called Oludeniz, which is located close to the mountains, caves and rivers we will need for our classes. It's on the Mediteranean coast, near Fethiye, Mugla in Turkey.

Our goal

Members of 1SRG will conduct a 7 to 8-day Wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) conference for ORDOS, a rope rescue team who wants to learn more about other areas of SAR. ORDOS has invited representatives of other Turkish teams to attend the courses. I am one of two canine handlers going. The other instructor is teaching 5 days of wilderness canine, and I will be assisting. I will also be teaching my 8 to 9-hour canine first-aid class, probably divided into 3 sections so we can have 5 full days in the field and spend the evenings on the first aid. The rest of the team will be running classes on Fundamentals of search and rescue, white water rescue, cave rescue and man tracking (tracking without a dog). The training will culminate in a final 24-hour Search and Rescue/Medical exercise.

Fundraising information

We are in need of funds for this mission and the equipment to be used in training. Costs will run about $1,500 to $2,000 per person, with ORDOS providing food and housing. I would like to get some advanced canine paramedic instruction tools for the trip. At the top of the wish list is a canine CPR mannequin that allows you to practice CPR, mouth-to-nose breathing, placing of IV catheters, passing of an endotracheal tube to assist breathing, and tapping the chest for air if the dog ruptures a lung thru trauma. This item costs about $2,000.

In addition to raising funds for this trip, we are also raising money for the Jaffe memorial fund. Begun by the parents of one of our search victims, this fund will finance searches where relatives cannot afford to help us with expenses (as we currently have no funds available.)

We appreciate any way in which you care to help us. For more information, please contact me as indicated below:
