Whoops! They messed up. Spotting little mistakes in movies..the way someone holds something, how someone's shirt looks one way in one shot, then different in the next, is a popular spectator sport, and The Lost World has a few of it's own. Try to spot these the next time you see JP2:- When Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) takes the binoculars from Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) in the scene where InGen helicopters invade the island, you'll notice that Ian is looking through them backwards.
- Continuity error: When Ian, Nick, and Eddie find the herd of stegosaurus early in the movie, Nick pulls out his JVC digital camera. In the next shot, Nick is holding his normal "Nikon" camera.
- When Nick meets Ian near the beginning of the movie, Eddie is trying to get the phone working -- maybe it would have helped if he wasn't holding the handset to his head upside-down. In the following scene, however, he's holding it properly.
- An object from a cut scene (described below) can be seen in the final version of the movie: A mysterious liquor bottle of some sort is sitting next to the injured Baby T-rex when Nick Van Owen rescues it.
- In the San Diego scene, Ludlow thanks the reporters for coming out in "the wee hours of the morning". However, the clock on the wall of the Harbor Master's office clearly reads "9:25".
- In the scene in Hammond's bedroom, when Hammond says, "And now it's only a matter of time, before this Lost World is found and pillaged," a mirror on a table to the viewer's right of Hammond reflects the blue jeans of a crew member or the camera man
- And while you're in a goofy mood (yeah, i know -- bad pun), check out some Jurassic Park goofs.
Cut Scenes
With every movie, many scenes are usually left on the proverbial "cutting room floor", and The Lost World is no exception. The script, characters, and direction of the story was constantly being modified, even during filming, to adapt to the new ideas of the director and writer. In fact, the infamous "San Diego" scene was dreamed up by Spielberg himself. Here's a list of some of the scenes that were filmed, but never made in into the final cut:
The scene in which Peter Ludlow addresses the InGen board members, which can be seen in the theatrical trailer for JP2, never made it into the film. In this important-sounding scene, Ludlow talks about how InGen is broke from paying of the families of those who died at Jurassic Park, and want John Hammond removed from the chief-executive-officer position. The InGen board members agree, and vote to remove him.- One scene, that David Koepp himself was sad to see go, involved a scene between "Roland the hunter and Peter Ludlow, a villain that is absolutely essential to the story." Koepp says that "Steven has promised me he'll put it back in the laserdisc...Let's see if he makes good!"
Another cut scene, involved an meeting of Roland Tenbo and Ajay Sidhu in a restaurant early in the movie. The scene shows the friendship of the two characters, and also the tenacity of Roland when he gets into a bar fight with a tourist harassing a waitress. - A scene was filmed in which the male and female T-Rexes attack Kelly while in the high hide alone. This scene, for some reason, was eventually scrapped.
- The remnance of a scene which was cut can be seen in the final version of the movie -- when Nick Van Owen rescues the injured Baby T-Rex, a liquor bottle of some sort can be seen next to the animal. According to the "Making of the Lost World", the scene that was cut describes how the baby T-rex is injured when a drunken Ludlow stumbles into the Rex nest, falling on the baby's leg.
- Spielberg and Company actually filmed a scene where a T-rex smashes into Benjamin's ("There's a dino in the backyard") bedroom, totally destroying it but leaving the family unscratched.
- If you have the "Dinosaur Scrapbook", published by Scholastic, check the following pictures for scenes that never made it in: Pages 8, 46 (6 (the raptor on the right), 47 (the raptor in the middle, and at top right), and 52 (pictures #1,9,7& 5).
Here are some scenes that were planned to be filmed, but were cut for various reasons (many of the scenes near the end were removed to make room for the San Diego scene):- The original ending of the movie, before Spielberg came up with the San Diego scene), was to have a longer "Ian vs. Raptors" scene in a larger version of the Village set. This scene was shortened and the set to be constructed was made smaller.
- Another considered ending to the movie (which was eventually scrapped) was one where Pteradons attack the helicopter leaving the island. Supposedly Stan Winston's animators were upset that the Pteradon wasn't in the movie, and asked for permission to put the Pteradon in at least one scene, which ended up being the final shot of the film.
