Pee Wee Punks

I will grant that accidents with firearms do occur when some stupid adult exposes a child to an unguarded firearm. That is a tragedy that can usually be traced to a person unschooled in firearms.

When we hear the cry for gun-control time and again so that we may protect our children, the children that are being massacred on the streets of our cities, we must examine more closely who these "children" are.

These "children," for the most part, especially in the inner cities, are "gang bangers" and often start their felonious careers at the age of 10. New York City and Los Angeles are on the cutting edge when it comes to the recruit-ment of tomorrow's criminals on today's playgrounds, Chicago, Miami [let us not forget the Florida tourist murders], and Newark are not far behind. We have all read and seen on TV that the majority of gang members are under the age of 17. That automatically, and legally define them as "children." They are recruited at the tender age of 10 with promises of money and eventually dope.

"They are easy pickings because they're hanging out on the streets with nothing to do," said Sgt. Robert Donofrio of the 5th Precinct Asian Gang Intelligence Unit NYPD.

We are lead to believe, when you read the press, that these "children" are lured into believing they are...listen to this, "joining a community service or-ganization and then find out they have been enlisted for criminal enterprise" [Alice McQuillan Knight-Rider Tribune News].

"Once they are in, they're terrified to leave," said Tom Leahy, head of the Bronx district attorney's racket's bureau...BULL CHIPS.

These "children" are in many ways smarter than adults, they know what is happening in their neighborhood and are eager to get in on the action. They are "lured" because they want cool sneakers, a mountain bike [not necessarily buy it], walking around money, dope, and "respect."

The New York Times on 12/25/94 did an extensive article on New York gangs and the Latin Kings in particular, once you read through all the smoke and mirrors the latter part of the article reports that the leadership of this "social community group" was not only beaten up by the membership for stealing funds, they are under a R.I.C.O. indictment. Do not tell me that these "children" do not know what is happening on their turf. The advantage of younger gang members is obvious, an adult convicted of first-degree manslaughter faces up to 25 years in a state prison...a Pee Wee 3 1/2 to 10 years in a youth facility where he can learn the finer art of felony.

These "children" are willingly recruited because they know their age will protect them from any serious prosecution because they are "children." They also know that at the age of 16 they will no longer be a Pee Wee King but a Latin King...and so the crown is passed.

The Oriental community often thought of as a stable environment is not immune from these children. Let us examine some of the recent behavior of these "children":

  • A 13 year old boy was charged with extortion for muscling protection money out of sixteen victims in the last six months for the Flying Drag-ons gang.

  • The Grand Street Dragons had 12 and 13 year old kids breaking into mailboxes.

  • Two members of the Mott Shadow Girls gang, ages 13 and 14, beat up a woman and took her purse.

  • Three seasoned 17 year olds took a new girl through an initiation. She was arrested for robbery after she beat up a woman and stole her money.

  • A 10 year old shoots a 14 year old and two days later is in turn shot by a 14 year old.

  • Most recently and closer to home...the Morristown twelve.

All of the above occurred in November of 1994 and January 1995, and I may have missed other accounts of similar acts. For this we are asked to give up our firearms, to protect these "children." Happy Thanksgiving and Happy New Year.

How many children in your neighborhood exhibit this type of predatory behavior? Not many I would think...and when that behavior is exhibited I am sure that it is nipped in the bud, and if it is not, shame on your community.

Do not believe for one moment that because you live in the suburbs you are safe. This plague is spreading across the country and is no longer confined to the City. We now have colors [blue and red] of the Latin Kings seen as close to home as Dover.

Rather than give up my firearm for the safety of these "children," I think I would rather buy a larger capacity magazine.

     'nuff said!
