Stone Mountain, in Georgia, just east of Atlanta, a mass of exposed granite rising 825 ft above the surrounding area and 1,683 ft above sea level; in face of mountain is a huge Confederate memorial carving of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis; work begun 1916 under direction of Gutzon Borglum; Augustus Lukeman succeeded him 1925; project discontinued 1928, resumed 1964 under direction of Walker Hancock, completed 1970.
